Senior HVAC Technician

Thalo Labs

Thalo Labs

New York, NY, USA
USD 70k-90k / year + Equity
Posted on Jul 2, 2025
Founded by NASA, Google, Sidewalk Labs, Waymo, and Cruise experts, Thalo is a tech-enabled services company transforming the HVAC industry with next-generation sensing and AI-powered intelligence. Heat pump and other HVAC failures cost billions in emergency repairs and wasted energy annually, and are managed by an increasingly short-handed labor pool. Thalo’s AI-powered platform transforms static assets into self-monitoring, high-performance systems, empowering technicians to shift from reactive fixes to proactive service.
Our team has built self-driving cars at Waymo, worked on satellite imagery at Google, designed systems for John Deere, developed space missions for NASA, led manufacturing design for Boom Supersonic jets, and more. We are united by our shared goal of making products that help us decarbonize today and accelerate drawdown globally.
We are seeking a motivated and responsible candidate who will plan and execute the installation and service of our HVAC sensor equipment throughout the five boroughs and beyond. This role is more than just installing equipment, we’re looking for someone to own the process from start-to-finish, analyze site data to ensure our sensors are working as expected, and continuously improve how we do our work. If you love working hands-on with technical equipment, are comfortable being in building mechanical spaces, have a high sense of ownership, and are an all-around problem solver then we’d love to talk!
This role is expected to spend 70% of the time in the field. Most project sites are in the NYC tri-state area, but some will require overnight travel in other states. All travel costs are covered by Thalo or done in a company provided vehicle.

What We Offer

  • An immediate opportunity to make an impact fighting climate change with a mission-driven team.
  • An in-person, collaborative culture. In our midtown Manhattan office, we not only have a stocked pantry but we also dedicate time to connect with each other during weekly happy hours, Falafel Fridays, and quarterly off-sites.
  • National subsidized healthcare plans for medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Additional benefits include a 401(k) program, 12 weeks paid parental leave, and paid time off
  • Free, anonymous mental health and coaching appointments through Lyra.
  • Thalo Labs believes everyone should be compensated fairly. At our ground-floor stage, our compensation structure places a strong emphasis on the value of high equity, with an annual base salary ranging from $70,000-$90,000.

What You'll Do

  • As our founding Field HVAC Engineer, you’ll be the hands-on leader bringing Thalo’s technology to life in the field—installing sensors, troubleshooting systems, and feeding insights back to the engineering team to make the product better every day.
  • Operate as our primary field engineer, installing Thalo’s sensor kits on heat pumps and air conditioners at customer buildings.
  • Identify opportunities for and implement improvements to Thalo’s product installation process, from pre-planning to developing improved commissioning tools.
  • Surface feedback to our engineering team by identifying real-world issues in the field Work in our lab to build sensors and prototype hardware before deploying them to the field
  • Analyze field data using our internal tools and spreadsheets to evaluate HVAC system performance and identify issues.
  • Coordinate field work with our customer success team and be the physical presence of Thalo on customer sites.
  • Train third-party installers to ensure high-quality, scalable deployments.
  • Travel as needed for key installs (most currently in the Northeast but could be anywhere in the U.S.).

What You Have

  • Deep HVAC experience—you’ve installed heat pumps yourself and can also explain the refrigeration cycle on a pressure-enthalpy chart.
  • Mechanical intuition—you can identify and navigate around key components inside a heat pump (i.e. compressor, condenser, expansion valve, evaporator, reversing valve).
  • Field Experience - Comfortable working in a variety of field settings in a hands on capacity (e.g. boiler/mechanical rooms, building rooftops, working on ladders, working with hand tools, etc.).
  • Engineering background—degree in mechanical, electrical, or related field—or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Field and in-office versatility—excited by a hybrid role that requires work in both field installation (mechanical rooms and rooftops) and lab/office environment presence
  • Growth mindset—you solve problems and share lessons learned in a productive and positive way.
  • Startup mentality—adaptable, proactive, and excited to build something together with a small but mighty team.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel 70% of the time

Bonus Points

  • Strong HVAC troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
  • Familiarity with HVAC controls or BMS systems
  • Experience training or managing installation teams
  • Interest in decarbonization, efficiency, and climate tech
