Position: Mechanical Engineer (Product Development and DFM)
Location: Brooklyn, NY (Brooklyn Navy Yard, near Wegmans)
Salary: $105k-$120k
About the Mechanical Engineering position:
You need to be a Mechanical Engineer with experience in Product Development, DFM, and heat transfer analysis; you have experience in developing products from scratch as well as iterating with manufacturers on existing products. You have experience doing heat transfer simulations.
Kelvin’s products focus on decarbonizing legacy multi-family residential buildings through technology, data, and product innovations such as the Cozy and Heat Pumps paired with a Thermal Battery or BESS at the point of use.
What You’ll Do
Mechanical Engineering / DFM
- Working with the various teams to understand the project or product requirements ie. heating/cooling, run times, etc
- Create and refine CAD designs for Kelvin’s heating and cooling products ( Cozy, Heat Pumps, Thermal Batteries)
- Important note: this position is not about heat/gain loss calculations for HVAC systems, this is about product development for the Cozy, Heat Pumps, Thermal Batteries and related brackets and supports.
- Ensure that designs are optimized for functionality, compatibility and manufacturability.
- Work with Lead Mechanical Engineer on ideation and prototyping. Collaborate with local shops and overseas manufacturers to prototype new parts and ideas. Play a pivotal role in transforming initial concepts into tangible models. Test prototypes in the field and provide constructive feedback for enhancements.
- Liaise with manufacturing firms to coordinate part changes, focusing on DFM to create production efficiencies and introduce new processes where needed.
- New Product Development: Collaborate with your manager, Lead Mechanical Engineer for our physical products, from concept to launch; ensuring alignment with company goals, customer needs, and municipal code compliance.
- Collaborate with industrial designers, engineering+manufacturing, and potential third parties as needed.
- Develop and manage project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure successful product launches.
What You’ll Need:
- Commitment to being in the office in the Brooklyn Navy Yard three-four days a week, to have full management and execution over our physical products.
- 5+ years of experience; comfortable prototyping, testing, and iterating through designs; and interacting with customers in the field during a product development life cycle
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, with a specialization in heat transfer analysis.
- Proficient in CAD software (we use Onshape), with experience in both creating and modifying designs for bent sheet metal and injection molded plastic.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder interaction and collaboration with external partners.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment and adapting to evolving priorities.
What We Offer:
- Competitive salary and equitable compensation
