Forests play an outsized role in climate impact. Globally, the natural cycle due to fall and regrowth alone results in larger fluctuation in GHG than all anthropogenic emissions combined. The exponential growth in wildfires, thus, is one of climate change’s most impactful implications to both nature and humanity. And it is happening right now, worldwide. In California alone, wildfires are now causing billions of dollars in damage and emitting the same amount of CO2 as 20M cars or 10M homes each year. While wildfire prevention is 20x more cost-effective than wildfire mitigation, in the current pace and scale of mitigation projects we are falling woefully behind the need.

At Earth Force, we’re developing a software solution suite that unlocks the execution of the landscape-scale wildfire prevention projects crucial for combatting the wildfire crisis.

The Earth Force Engineering Team is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Algorithms Engineer to join our team. As a Senior Algorithms Engineer, you will play a crucial role in developing cutting-edge algorithms for processing 3D point-clouds, implementing localization, mapping and sensing techniques and leveraging machine learning for advanced data analysis. You will work closely with a cross-functional team to develop our capabilities to “see” and understand the forested environment to better guide and supervise forestry operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a team to design and develop advanced algorithms aimed at interpreting and extracting meaningful information from 3D point-clouds.
  • Develop algorithms for object detection and recognition.
  • Enhance SLAM algorithms tailored to complex environments.
  • Implement algorithms to analyze and quantify geometric properties of detected objects, contributing to spatial understanding and navigation.
  • Research and apply machine learning techniques to classify objects based on their characteristics, improving data interpretation and decision-making processes.
  • Implement and optimize algorithms for real-time performance on specialized hardware, ensuring efficient execution and minimal latency in critical applications.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in the field, continuously exploring and proposing innovative solutions.

Qualifications:

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Machine Learning, Physics, or a related field.
  • 5 years of proven industry experience in algorithms development.
  • Experience in 3D point-cloud processing.
  • Experience with computer vision and machine learning algorithms and techniques.
  • Proficiency developing in Python and C++.
  • A strong understanding of statistical analysis and evaluation metrics.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent self-learning and problem-solving skills and ability to think creatively.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills in English.

Preferred experience:

  • Implementing visual / LiDAR SLAM.
  • Deploying to Nvidia platforms using ROS.
  • Using Docker containers and cloud computing instances.
